How often do you say thank you to a staff member for a job well done?
How often do you recognize someone for going beyond what was required in order to meet a deadline, or exceed client expectations?
Recognition doesn’t have to be much. In fact, it doesn’t have to cost you a cent, and the rewards can be huge: increased productivity; employee recruitment and retention; increased morale; positive reflection of the company; an attractive place to want to do business; enhanced teamwork and energy; reinforcement of corporate values; empowering employees to excel in their role, and the list goes on.
But you must also keep in mind that there is a fine line between sincerity and over the top recognition that may become uncomfortable for the recipient. You must also keep in mind that some people would prefer to fly below the radar, so to speak, and that public recognition could be worse than no recognition, so know and understand the individual(s) being recognized. Another piece of advice is to be timely with the recognition - don’t wait to say thanks or show appreciation.
You just land a big account. How about saying something like, “That project that we submitted last week, the client really appreciated that we were ahead of the deadline, and was really pleased with the final product that we have been awarded the contract. Thank you for all that you did to help us ace this account.”
How about spontaneously taking an employee out for coffee or for lunch and just check in with them?
How about celebrating a milestone that was collectively achieved by the entire team?
Although we know it takes a total team effort to be successful, this week is Administrative Professional Week and today is Administrative Professional Day. So take time to say thank you and recognize your admin professional for their ongoing and valued contributions.

Each of us owns a piece of THE footprint in one way or another. Have I enticed your interest to keep reading?
Personally, professionally and corporately; as an individual, group or business entity, we all have a responsibility to contribute toward Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - practices that involve participation in initiatives that benefit society through environmental strategies and social responsibilities, such as volunteering, fundraising and donations.
MRSB works hard to encourage and develop ways to be even greater environmental stewards and increase our level and mindfulness of corporate social responsibility. We also recognize and understand how the development and sustainability of these responsibilities are important to our future generations and that we must lead by example.
Despite our MRSB corporate colour being blue, we are proud of our commitment to be green. Some of our initiatives include:
- Purchase of recycled products
- Services through fellow environmental stewards
- Paper reduced office environment through technologies
- Use of green cleaning products
- Recycling of cans/bottles and using the deposit toward fundraising
- Energy efficiencies
- Reducing water consumption
Socially, we give back to our community through volunteering our time to sports teams as coach or participant, at events from bartending to ticket sales, and as board/committee members for the PEI Autism Society, QEH Foundation, various church groups, Holland College Foundation, PEI Marathon, GCACC, Junior Achievement, Canadian Evaluation Society, to name but a few.
We monetarily support so many groups and non-charitable organizations such as the PEI Chapter of the Cancer Society, PEI Newcomers Association, MS Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl of Kid’s Sake, Humane Society, PEI Autism Society, the food bank, IWK, Catholic Family Services and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, along with community events such as the Charlotettown Islanders, UPEI Sports teams and events, fundraising golf tournaments, Charlottetown Wintertide, and many more.
Our main fundraising focus for the past 14 months has been The Children’s Wish Foundation of PEI where we have, to date, proudly raised over $7,000. We collect beverage containers for recycling; play chase the ace, tax season bingo and 50/50; organized an e-auction of handcrafted items; challenged to eat raw oysters; donated proceeds from the overall sale of a product; internal competitions; and, made and sold smoothies as a healthy treat. Our overall goal is to grant a child a wish which means we have to raise $10,000 by September 2016, so you can see we are close, but we aren’t done yet.
The entire team, both in Summerside and Charlottetown, believes in our environmental and social responsibility, not because we have to, but because we want to. And because it is a part of our corporate culture, we are supported and encouraged.
